Grounded in interior fiction and fantasy, Soryun Ahn's practice captures an internal reality materialised on the canvas. Ahn's paintings reveal thresholds where ancient, collective myths intersect with personal imagination, re-emerging as a distinct contemporary reality. By traversing the boundaries between grand historical narratives and intimate, self-constructed folklore, she builds new worlds within the frame. Her practice focuses on brushstrokes generated as "symptoms"—marks created in the process of blurring the borderlines between reality and non-reality, painting and narration—tracing a state where gesture manifests as a new painterly language.

Enigmatic figures emerge where contemporary everyday landscapes meet the narrative landscapes of the past. Depicted as women, specific archetypes, or hybrid beings—such as half-human, half-animal creatures, angels, or ghosts—they vividly embody intimate, autobiographical imagery. Placed within these liminal worlds, these beings constantly struggle to define their existence through charged actions: a piercing stare, ceaseless wandering, or a howl. Through a painterly space governed by a seemingly non-linear yet repetitive continuity of time, her work confronts the presence of death alongside the ironies and mysteries of daily life, ultimately uncovering the psychological underworld that lies just beneath the surface.
